Producer Of 'The Day That Changed Everything: A Father's Journey In And Out Of Grief After The Drink-Driving Death Of His Son, Zak' (September 2020 - October 2020)
At 4am on May 5th 2007, my 21-year-old son, Zak, was killed when his car crashed head-on into a tree less than 1km from our home in Johannesburg. He had visited many bars that night with his group of friends and had been more than three times over the legal alcohol limit for driving in South Africa.
It has taken me more than thirteen years to summon up the courage to revisit the terrible pain of those early days, weeks, months and years to write and produce this 37-minute video, 'The Day That Changed Everything', but recently I have felt compelled to tell my story for two primary reasons. Firstly, I want the video to provide a deterrent to drink-driving in the 17-25 year-old age group in particular amongst which the highest number of fatalities are recorded. Secondly, I want to try and appeal to those who drive while over the legal alcohol limit to consider the utter devastation they will cause in the lives of the loved ones they leave behind. Serious thoughts of suicide, depression, difficulties in forming and maintaining relationships, business collapse and loss of financial independence were all emotions and experiences that either I, my wife or 17-year-old daughter experienced to varying degrees during those first few years after Zak's death.
This video also shows that there IS light at the end of a very dark tunnel and that, in time, the bereaved do learn to live with their loss and CAN be joyful again. But if this video saves just one life, or prevents just one person from living with serious life-changing injuries, or protects loved ones from experiencing truly unimaginable pain after a totally avoidable drink-driving death, I'll consider it a great success.
